To kick off the new year, 275 course members and directing staff from the Advanced Command and Staff Course (ACSC) 28, travelled overseas for their Regional Security Exercise (RSE) 1.

The course was split into mixed groups of approximately 50 personnel to simultaneously travel to one of five European locations: Finland, Latvia and Estonia (combined visit), The Czech Republic, Italy and Cyprus, each for four to five days.

RSE 1 is a physical continuation of the ‘Understand’ phase of the course, giving the course members and directing staff the opportunity to further consider ‘International Relationships’ theory, regional security threats, structures and institutions as well as environmental differences. And to simply enjoy the distinct historical and cultural opportunities, while team building and networking across the wider course cohort.

With such a wide span of European travel, from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, the course enjoyed a range of visit locations, as well as weather conditions.

Lieutenant Colonel John Russell, ACSC Deputy Chief of Staff said:

“All visits benefited from the in-country and regional perspectives of the respective UK embassies and consulates, with special thanks to all the ambassadors and defence attachés.
Host nation support for all visits was excellent with privileged access to higher level ministerial briefings, visits to key military facilities as well as civilian, academic and industrial sites of interest.”

Outside the busy work schedule the opportunity was taken in all locations to visit sites of cultural and historic significance, from the KGB Museum to the Colosseum, or Ice Hockey to the Vatican.

With RSE 1 completed, the next period of travel will be after Easter with the course again splitting down to go further afield to: the USA, Turkey, Ghana, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Vietnam, as part of RSE 2.
