Recent collaboration between the Defence Leadership Centre’s, Concepts, Research and Development (CRD) team and counterparts from Henley Business School’s Centre for Leadership (HCL), has resulted in a full examination and review of the Leadership in Defence handbook (2004).

The workshop utilised the Leadership Edge Framework’s constituent parts, ‘Lead Self’, ‘Lead People’ and ‘Lead Organisation’, to frame the discussion and address specific areas relating to strategic leadership.

CRD’s Integrative Defence Leadership model was also discussed which advocates a style of leadership that focusses on diverse perspectives, ideas and resources to create a unified and cohesive approach to problem-solving and decision-making

Representing CRD were Colonel Martyn Forgrave PhD, Dr Ed Gosling and Dr Amanda Stenhaug.  The team hosted Professor Bernd Vogel, Professor in Leadership and Founding Director of HCL and Doctor Selin Kudret, an Associate Professor in Leadership and Director for the Army’s Higher Education Pathway.

Professor Vogel said of the workshop:

"It was a real privilege to visit the Defence Academy, continuing the dialogue we began at last year’s NATO Leader Development Workshop. The new Leadership in Defence handbook is not only an exciting project; it’s also an essential initiative for equipping senior leaders in defence with an integrated framework and a practical tool kit, one that will undoubtedly address important issues for the contemporary senior leader in the defence sector. It’s a huge honour for the HCL to contribute to this project.”

Colonel Forgrave added:

“It was a fantastic opportunity for us to collaborate with Henley to soundboard our ideas and to be challenged on our thinking.  The workshop was particularly useful in calibrating interdependent ideas – great strides forward were taken. To paraphrase Jean-Paul Sartre, we broke some bones in our heads to think new thoughts”.

The workshop with Henley Business School presents an excellent example of the value in collaborating with subject matter experts from across defence, government, allies, industry and academia to receive new insights, challenge and inspiration.

The CRD team looks forward to further collaborations with HCL and other partners in support of Leadership in Defence 2nd Edition and many more endeavours in the future.
