The Defence Academy has welcomed the Commandant of the Japanese Joint Staff College (JSC), Lieutenant General Masahito Yajima as part of the JSC’s annual programme of international visits.
Following on from the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Defence Academy and the JSC in January, the visit allowed Lt Gen Yajima to meet with and establish a more personal relationship with our own Chief Executive and Commandant, Major General Peter Rowell.
Lieutenant General Yajima was accompanied by directing staff and students from the JSC Higher Officers Course, who gained insight into:
- the Joint Services Command and Staff College; with focus on our Higher Command and Staff Course (HCSC), and Advanced Command and Staff Course (ACSC)
- technical training/education delivered by our Defence College for Military Capability Integration, including STEM, capability development and acquisition, and wargaming
- defence concepts and doctrine
The delegation was keen to understand the Defence Academy’s approach to teaching the moral component of fighting power (as delivered by Joint Services Command and Staff College, International Group and the Defence Leadership and Business Group), and the joint and co-located delivery of the physical aspect of fighting power, as provided by DCMCI.
The visit also gave the opportunity for the delegation to spend time Lieutenant Commander Naotaka Sumikawa of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force, the latest Japanese ACSC course member to attend the Defence Academy.
