The Defence Centre for Languages and Culture (DCLC) has completed preparations for international course members participating on the Advanced Command and Staff Course (ACSC) in September.

Delivered by DCLC’s English Language Wing (ELW), Pre-ACSC runs annually from May to August. It offers an intensive 12-week course that focuses on both English language, and the required academic skills to meet the demands of ACSC.

Course content includes:

  • academic writing
  • critical thinking
  • presentation skills
  • leading and participating in debates and seminars

Through exposure to materials that complement ACSC’s curriculum, course members on Pre-ACSC improve language proficiency via a wide range of topics including:

  • politics and ideology
  • current affairs
  • social issues
  • military terminology

Alongside study, Pre-ACSC enables course members to network, to build important relationships with fellow colleagues, and to embed themselves into UK military life prior to their arrival on ACSC. They also have the chance to visit places of military, historical and cultural significance, such as Bristol and Warwick.

Commander Gustavo Cabral Thomé, Brazilian Navy, who attended the course in 2022, recalls the significance of the 12 week programme:

“The importance of the ACSC pre-course cannot be overstated. It serves as a vital bridge between the diverse backgrounds of international students and the demanding academic requirements of ACSC. By equipping students with the necessary skills, knowledge, and relationships, the pre-course lays a solid foundation for their success on ACSC”.

ELW delivers a number of language courses and pre-courses throughout the year. Ranging from four to thirteen weeks in length, these courses are designed to support international military personnel progress to the next stage of their career, where English language is a requirement. Courses are delivered solely in English and include familiarisation with British military culture and British culture.
