Neil, who works here at the Defence Academy in the Defence College for Military Capability Integration as a Digital and Information Manager, has been recognised in the ‘Innovator of the Year’ category alongside seven other finalists from across from all three branches of the Armed Forces, the Civil Service, defence firms and suppliers.

Neil said:

“I managed a virtual learning environment used by a large section of defence. Because it contained training material that should not be seen by the public it was kept behind a gateway. Military and Civil Service staff could create their own accounts with ease using their Modnet address. Phase One recruits and overseas students would get sponsored by a member of staff, of a high enough grade, to have a limited account that would grant them access to the courses they need and nothing else, so they could not look at other courses without permission.“But cadets, due to their age, were not allowed on the system due to safeguarding issues. I took the initiative to speak with our developers about options and managed to create an account that would satisfy all that was needed for safeguarding. The cadets would only have access to a specific cadet area, which could not be seen by other users of the system. The messaging facility was also disabled. I had the new account created and successfully tested. The approach worked and cadets were allowed on the Defence Learning Environment (DLE).

The LGBTQ+ Defence Awards sets out to encourage the establishment of a positive, inspiring platform to showcase LGBTQ+ contributions to defence. The Awards recognise Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) trailblazers but also other LGBTQ+ achievers who simply through feeling able to be themselves at work have maximised their value to UK defence.

Attracting over 250 nominations from all corners of the industry, the inaugural LGBTQ+ Defence Awards will be the first time the broad spectrum of UK defence comes together to celebrate, showcase and promote the power and vital importance of LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Good luck, Neil!
