About this course

This course will introduce New Entrant Chaplains to some major themes in the tradition and praxis of Chaplaincy within the Royal Navy. The activities and structure of the Royal Navy will be described and the roles of deployed and shoreside chaplaincy explored. The particular tasks and expectations of Chaplains will be discussed, and individuals will be encouraged to identify where their confidence and challenges lie within this. As part of a Tri-Service cohort, Chaplains will engage in a discrete Mental Fitness programme within Module B for their benefit and for the benefit of those they serve. This grants a specific JPA competency.

Chaplains will also be introduced to some of the structures which will support them in their work and ministry, including charities, Joint and Single Service organisations and the Naval Chaplaincy Headquarters, and will build connections with tri-Service Chaplains both experienced and new to their roles.

The course is delivered in 3 x 5 day modules.

How this course will help your career

This course will enable chaplains to begin their careers with the Royal Navy with confidence. For both Regulars and Reservists it will set a pattern and expectation for leadership and behaviours in the units to which they are assigned.

This course is conducted after Phase 1 training at Britannia Royal Naval College. For Regulars the expectation will be that it is completed in one block. Reservists may choose this route, but also may elect to complete the Modules over a 12 month period. Module A must be completed first.
