Course Information
About this course
'Developmental' mentoring should take place outside of the chain of command/line management chain; therefore, this course is for those who meet the criteria of being a current mentor or will be within 3 months of their proposed course date.
During the three-day course, you will be introduced to 'mentoring best practice' to enhance your mentoring knowledge, skills and behaviours to support future mentoring relationships. You will learn the fundamentals of mentoring and the mentoring process.
You will have the opportunity to practice your skills, including reflective practices, questioning skills, listening skills and goal setting.
The course incurs a three day commitment to learning from the delegate; one day preparation delivered via online learning (Mentoring Fundamentals) and the completion of a reflective journal, followed by 2 days virtual delivery (0900 to 1700).
The course is accredited by the Charted Management Institute (CMI) to a Level 5 Award in Professional Mentoring Practice. Please see 'How will I be assessed' for more information.
Joining instructions will be issued approximately four weeks in advance of the course start date.
Delegates who do not complete the pre-course work will be removed from the course (their Line Manager and TLB will be notified).

How you will be assessed
Successful completion of all elements (online learning activities, full attendance/participation of the two virtual modules and submission of the development plans) is eligible to apply for the Charted Management Institute (CMI) Level 5 Award in Professional Mentoring Practice.
Please note, in addition to completing our course, the CMI qualification is achieved by writing a 4000 word assignment and the submission of an evidenced work-based mentoring relationship, including a requirement for one of the mentoring sessions to be observed. To complete this accreditation, the onus is on the individuals to find a qualified observer.
The Defence Academy will not pay for this qualification – you will need to secure appropriate funding (£145 including VAT).
