About this course

This course is allocated to specific countries by DE Strat MOD through the Forward Allocation Baseline for forthcoming years. Bids should be submitted through respective Defence Attachés or IPP/WEP desk officers.

The Managing Defence in the Wider Security Context course will provide you with a platform to examine different approaches to governance and management of defence in developed and transitional democracies.

You will be encouraged, along with the staff to take a critical review of potential options of how major defence issues are addressed by a range of countries.

You will identify appropriate policies, principles and techniques to advance security sector development.

You will be expected to openly express independent critical judgement with regards to problems and solutions within the forum of the course.

The course is tailored to the host country and you will cover security, strategy and governance topics in the first week and selected defence management topics in the second week.

If required you will cover change and risk management, national resilience, acquisition strategies, transparency and accountability along with the international law of armed conflict.

What you will learn

The course content will include:

  • enhancing your knowledge of your national defence and security systems
  • enhancing your analytical skills to help improve and transform governance and management
  • assessing your national security within the international context
  • evaluating current challenges to state sovereignty
  • gaining a better appreciation of the critical importance of effective governance in defence
  • assessing how defence is managed and how changes can be introduced effectively

Before you attend

If English is not your first language you will need to at IELTS level 5.5+ to gain the most from the experience.
