About this course

The Defence Wargaming Practitioner Course is designed to provide you with the ability to facilitate wargames, modify them to meet the specific needs of the audience and be able to capture the data, lessons, or academic reflection, necessary to meet the desired outcomes.

The practitioner course is the second in a series of defence wargaming courses preceded by a foundation course. It is followed by a designer course which you may subsequently attend to continue your professional development in the wargaming sector.

In the event of the course being over-subscribed, the following actions are to be taken:
•    the basic principle is “first come first served”, so that personnel accepted onto the course will be automatically accepted for the first 18 places
•    applicants for the two remaining places will be informed that they have provisional acceptance subject to priority applications and the course loading. If they do not hear to the contrary four weeks prior to the course start, they are to assume they have been accepted and should attend. See the priority list below for filling these places
•    the courses are available for income generation (other government departments, MOD contractors, and partner nations to attend), so if there are applications the final two scheduled places will be “reserved” for these, but only if they apply more than four weeks prior to the course start. If there are civilian or non-MOD contractor applications these will be considered on a case-by-case basis
•    applications for places beyond the 20 allocated places are to be informed that the course is over-subscribed, and they have been placed on a reserve list. Subject to the priority applications and the course loading they will be informed four weeks prior to the start of the course if there have been cancellations, and their application has been successful
•    if applications have indicated an alternative course date, and their application is beyond the 20 already allocated places, they will be treated as applying for their second-choice date, on the date of their initial application
•    if the course is fully booked (20 places allocated), and a case for priority attendance has been made by the applicant’s chain of command, an exceptional case will be considered to remove a booked student according to the priorities detailed below (in category order, but on a first come first served basis within each category). Final approval will be by COS DEWH:

•    DEWH staff (MOD/embedded DstlASTRID)
•    Dstl staff
•    wargaming delivery personnel in front line commands (including analysis and experimentation roles (Joint Force Experimentation/OA/OR))
•    Defence Academy teaching directing staff
•    Other MOD or Civil Service personnel
•    long term civilian contract staff working in direct support of MOD training systems (on a fill-up basis in the event of untaken MOD places)
